When the Cure Becomes the Poison

The cure for any ailment can become a poison.

A virtue, when taken to the extreme, can become a toxic behavior.

Confidence — the cure for insecurity — can turn into arrogance, leading one to overestimate one’s abilities or dismiss others’ contributions.

Discipline — the cure for chaos — can turn into rigidity, leading to an inability to adapt when plans need to change.

Empathy — the cure for indifference — can turn into people pleasing, neglecting one’s own needs for the sake of others. It

Similarly, any remedy or positive behavior, when take to its extreme, can become the disease.

In moderate quantities, pain killers ease pain. But too many at once becomes a lethal poison.

Exercise, in the right dose, is a healthy practice. It builds strength, boosts mental health, and prevents disease. But taken to the extreme it can wear down the body, create exhaustion, and lead to injury or hormonal imbalances.

Hydration is essential for preserving life, both in our bodies and in the earth. But too much water creates a flood that can be lethal.

There’s a reason that the Buddhists speak about “the middle way.”
