Untame Yourself

July 27, 2022 | Renée Fishman

This poem was inspired by multiple conversations I have had lately with a diverse group of women. Each, in her own way, has expressed feeling like their life is flat and uninspired and they have lost their inner spark. If that describes you, I hope this helps you stoke the flames of your fire.

Untame Yourself

How much energy do you expend
cleaning up your messiness
hiding your imperfections
subduing the fire that rages within you.

How much effort do you invest
containing your emotions
pulling the shades down to keep out the light
stuffing things into dark corners.

You were trained in the art of politeness.
Schooled to be obedient.
Non-disruptive.
A good girl.

Your compliance earned you love
and so you buried the parts
that burned with desires and dreams
and longed to run wild in the sand.

You planned your path and
trodded well-worn roads
to destinations already discovered
by those who dared to forge their own way.

You forgot from where you came.
You forgot your sacred dreams.
You forgot what matters most.
Your soul. Your spirit.

But your inner fire did not forget.
Buried yet alive, it has been simmering.
Waiting for you to remember.
Waiting for you to return.

It is time.
Time to disrupt.
Time to break free.
Time to roar.

Untame yourself.

Unshackle yourself
from the shoes and corsets that have confined you.
Root your feet in the sand.
Draw strength from the Earth.

Breathe life into your fire.
Stoke the flames of your passions.
Untame your wild heart.
Dare to be shameless.

Rediscover yourself.
Reclaim your power.
Return home to your soul.
