A Life Lesson From Street Repaving

November 13, 2022 | Renée Fishman

The street where I am living is being repaved. This is a welcome development, as it’s been bumpy and ridden with potholes.

It’s also been an interesting process to observe.

The city pavers don’t simply come and lay down new asphalt.

First, they come and dig up the asphalt that’s there. It’s loud, messy, and disruptive.

For the past few days, the road has remained rough, with the manhole covers sticking out from the bare, gravely street.

Each time I drive down the street, I feel the reverberations from the bumpy, rough road.

Once they repave the road, it will be a smooth ride.

But for now, it’s uncomfortable. Sometimes a little painful.

This is how the process works.

Not just for actual roads, but for the road of life.

Destruction is the first act of creation. In nature, in street paving, and in our personal lives and businesses.

To create something new requires that we destroy something that already exists.

It’s going to be messy and disruptive. It’s going to be uncomfortable. It might even be physically painful.

But you’ll get through it.

And eventually, you’ll feel the joy of a smooth ride.
