I know what I should be doing; I’m just not doing it.
This is one of the most common lines I hear from prospective clients.
It might be true for you too.
I have yet to meet a person who doesn’t have something they want to be doing but aren’t doing.
You have something you know you should do, or need to do, or want to do, but you aren’t doing it. Or you aren’t doing it consistently.
It might be a real business “necessity” like your marketing or making sales calls. Perhaps it’s a regular workout or scheduling an overdue doctors appointment.
Or it may be an abandoned hobby: playing your musical instrument, getting outside with your camera, working on that great idea for a novel.
I try to stay away from absolutes, but I’ll go out on a limb here to say:
Everyone has something.
So here’s the big question:
Why aren’t you doing it?
What are your reasons? What are the stories you tell about why you’re not creating time for it? What are your excuses?
People who identify as high achievers generally don’t like the word “excuses.” They often tell me it’s a valid reason or demur that the story they are telling is not an excuse.
If the story you’re telling is excusing you from doing something, it’s an excuse.
Let’s accept it. It’s not a bad thing.
The movement to adopt a #noexcuses mindset is misplaced.
If you don’t own the excuse you’ll never get past it.
I welcome my clients to bring their excuses. I encourage it. In fact, I insist on it.
When I help clients design rituals, we look at their excuses in advance so we can plan how to navigate them. When we see the story we can challenge it and work with it.
If there’s something you’re not doing that you want to be doing, you must look at why you’re not doing it.
Bring the excuses to light so you can move them out of the way.

bring your excuses
the reasons it won’t work
challenge your story
