Mars in Leo: Open-Hearted Warrior

July 1, 2021 | Renée Fishman

Today, Mars, which in the sign of Leo, is in an opposition to Saturn, which is currently in the sign of Aquarius.

When planets are in an opposition they sit exactly 180-degrees apart on the wheel of the Zodiac, like a full moon; they can see each other. Oppositions show us the tensions and polarities between the two planets involved.

In this case, it’s about seeing the obstacles that are in our way of moving forward.

Saturn is cold and restrained, a slow-moving planet that is about restriction and limitation. Saturn represents the obstacles preventing action.

Mars is the warrior; the red-hot planet of action. It’s passionate and unrestrained, desiring to move quickly.

Although Mars can be prickly and hot under the collar, it’s not always looking for a fight. In Leo, the sign ruled by the Sun and associated with the heart, Mars brings a steadiness fueled by courage.

Meditation teacher Jeff Warren observes that meditation is known as the warrior’s path. But it’s not about aggression; it’s about the courage to stay open inside any intensity. — Jeff Warren

This is Mars in Leo: a courageous heart-warrior.

As Mars opposes Saturn we get a more clear view of the obstacles in our path; what is keeping us from taking action.

Astrologer Chani Nichlas teaches that this is not about asking why is this happening to me?

I would add that it’s also not about asking how is this happening for me? or even how is this happening through me?’

What this is about is having the courage to look at what’s in the way, with an open heart — without resistance — and to acknowledge that “this is happening” so we can work with it and eventually move through it.

If you’re questioning why or how it’s happening — even if you’re coming from a place of “this is happening for me” or “this is happening through me” — then you’re not in complete acceptance of it.

And if you’re not in acceptance, you’re in resistance.

Only by accepting a situation as it is can we begin to work with it and move through it.
