The Power of a New Angle

November 1, 2025 | Renée Fishman

What you see is a reflection of what you look for.

How you see is a reflection of how you look at it.

As you look at something long enough, the nature of it changes, the way you see it changes, and it, in turn, changes you.

It’s a reinforcing cycle.

Everything is a matter of perspective.

When you change your angle, you change your perspective. And when you change your perspective everything changes.

The thing you’re looking at changes. And you change.

Giving yourself a new angle changes your perspective and it eventually changes you.

And that further changes how you see.

How you see something also depends on the lens you’re using.

Physical pain shapes your perception, just like a wide angle lens distorts the contours of a physical space.

Your environment, circumstances, and future outlook appear different when you look at them through a lens of physical pain or a dysregulated nervous system than they do when your body feels good and you are regulated.

Looking at moving objects at different speeds will show you different nuances. Watching something in slow motion, might reveal the nuances and the flaws.

Our speed as the viewer also shapes what we see. When we look at something while rushing past it, we might not see it at all. When we slow our pace to examine it, we see it in a new light.

Why does this matter?

The meaning we give to something — an object, an experience, an environment — depends on how we see it.

The problem is that we are often walking around blind or not fully looking.

Our minds try to hold things still, to keep things from changing.

When you look at something in the same way for long enough you “lose perspective.”

Changing your angle gives you a new perspective. As you look at something from different perspectives you develop objectivity, insight, foresight, hindsight.

Changing your perspective changes your understanding.

If everything is a matter of perspective, then it’s good to cultivate the skill of creating fresh ones.

Changing the angle from which you look at something changes everything.
