The conductor turned to the audience and asked if anyone knew how to sight read. He was looking for someone who could fill in.
A few people put their hands up. Sterling Nasa, a 21-year old University student, tentatively raised his hand. Then his friend forcibly raised it for him and brought attention to Sterling.
The conductor called him forward, and within minutes, he was on stage performing with the orchestra.
Much can be said about Mr. Nasa’s dedication to his craft and his discipline in showing up to practice. Without that, his performance wouldn’t have been possible.
But don’t overlook the role of his friend.
When he was timid, she believed in him.
She raised his hand fully.
She called out from the audience to bring attention to them.
Talent and skill are helpful, but alone they aren’t enough.
Everyone needs a hype person.
Someone to believe in us when we don’t fully believe in ourselves.
Someone to promote us for the right opportunities.
Someone who pushes us to take the leap when we’re really ready for it.
Find the people in your life who are your hype people. And aim to be that kind of person for someone else.
Love it? Hate it? What do you think? Don't hold back...
