5 Things to Know About Mercury Retrograde in Virgo

August 23, 2023 | Renée Fishman

How efficient are your systems and processes? Which ones are no longer working for you? What new systems do you need to implement to help ease your daily tasks?

This all comes up for review starting today, as Mercury stations retrograde in Virgo for the next 3 weeks.

Here are five things to know about Mercury retrograde in Virgo:

(1) Dates

Mercury will station retrograde on August 23, 2023 at 3:59 pm ET at 21°51’ of Virgo.

It will retrograde back to 8°00’ and will station direct on September 15, 2023 at 4:21 pm ET.

It will clear it’s post-retrograde shadow on September 30, 2023 at 1:16 am ET. כ

(2) Mercury Retrograde is Nothing to Fear

No two words seem to strike more fear in the hearts and psyches of many casual followers of astrology than “Mercury Retrograde.”

If you listen to people talk about it, you might think it was the sign of an impending apocalypse. Articles abound about how Mercury Retrograde can “cause” all sorts of mishaps, from miscommunication to travel delays.

In fact, Mercury stations retrograde three (and sometimes four) times a year, and each time for three weeks. It’s not practical to shut down your life for Mercury retrograde. Instead, you can learn how to work with its energy so that you can make the most of it.

(3) What a Mercury Retrograde Means

In astronomical terms, Mercury is “retrograde” when it appears to be moving backward in the sky from our vantage point on Earth. This happens when the planet slows down in its orbit around the Sun.

In the story of astrology, Mercury retrogrades are a period of reflection. I like to think of Mercury retrograde as a quarterly review. The topics for review are set by the sign where Mercury is retrograding.

(4) Mercury in Virgo Themes

Mercury is the planet that represents the thinking mind. It’s the messenger, the communicator, the counter, the sorter, the organizer.

Mercury is the ruler of Virgo, a sign that loves a good system and process. Virgo is the sign of duty, devotion, and details.

Virgo’s dominion includes those quiet acts we perform regularly to keep things going. Watering the plants. Washing the dishes. Caring for the animals. Doing the laundry.

(5) How to Work With Mercury Retrograde in Virgo

Virgo loves system, processes, and routines. While Mercury is retrograde here, it’s time to review yours.

Mercury retrograde will show you what systems are broken and need to be fixed or replaced, but you likely already know what’s not working.

This is the time to fix what’s broken or create new systems that can help you get from where you are now to where you want to go next.
