Across the internet, my feeds are filled with various fitness experts who proclaim the “best” way to get stronger. Some preach powerlifting. Some advocate for kettlebells. Others promise bodyweight exercises or pilates as the golden path.
So who’s correct?
It depends on what you goal is.
When I first started publishing a daily blog almost eight years ago, one of my goals was to send a consistent newsletter. My hypothesis was that the process of writing and publishing daily would help me implement that consistency in my newsletter.
It didn’t quite work like that.
Here’s a truth I’ve learned over the years:
All training is specific.
To be sure, a certain amount of skills or strength will carry over.
A base level of strength, however cultivated, will help you build strength in your chosen modality. You’ll get some amount of transfer from kettlebells to barbells, or from barbells to kettlebells.
The skills of ideation, turning thoughts into words, and hitting publish on something “good enough” can help you write a daily blog, send a newsletter, and even give you some degree of head start in filming videos.
But to get better at anything, you have to practice that thing.
There’s no substitute for putting in your reps on the thing that you want to build strength in.
Love it? Hate it? What do you think? Don't hold back...
