It’s the end of an era, and the start of a new one.
You don’t need to follow astrology to know that big shifts are happening in our world. But following astrology can give helpful context about the nature of those shifts, how long they’ll play out, and what to look for as they unfold.
In terms of planetary movements, no shift is as big as when Pluto moves into a new sign.
On November 18, 2024, Pluto leaves Capricorn and moves into Aquarius.
If you even casually follow astrology websites or on social media, you may have heard people talking about the big shift of Pluto into Aquarius and how this is a Big Deal.
Perhaps you’re wondering why it is such a Big Deal.

Why This is Such a Big Deal
It’s a big deal because Pluto doesn’t change signs often.
Because it takes 248 years to transit around the entire zodiac, and it spends so long in each sign, its transit through a sign defines a generation of people.
Pluto has been in the sign of Capricorn since 2008, with only two minor toe dips into Aquarius:
- March 23-June 11, 2023
- January 20-September 1, 2024
Once it leaves Capricorn on November 18, it will never return to that sign again in our lifetimes. It will be in Aquarius for the next 20 years, until March 8, 2043.
The next 20 years of our collective lives will be influenced and shaped by whatever Pluto in Aquarius has in store for us.
Significations of Pluto
In the story of astrology, the planets are the Who. Every planet in the solar system is an archetype that plays a particular role.
Pluto is known as the Lord of the Underworld. It’s the Transformer.
Pluto is the planet of wealth, power, death, secrets, mystery, and shadow. This is the planet of secrets, what’s hidden beneath the surface, the deep subconscious.
It represents underworld journeys, unconscious, and our collective and individual shadow.
Pluto is known as an intense planet and for taking things to the extreme. Part of this relates to the fact that it’s the furthest planet from the Sun — literally at the extreme end of the solar system. It’s also extreme in how thorough it is in its journey.
How Pluto Works
The zodiac wheel contains 360 degrees, and each sign contains 30 degrees. Each degree is further divided into 60 minutes. Pluto spends a long time on each degree of each sign. It is retrograde for approximately 7 months of each year, which means that it appears to be moving backward more than it moves forward.
Because of this, it travels back and forth over the same degree multiple times. It gives every point it touches a through working over, which explains its association with intensity. By digging in the same spot repeatedly, it eventually unearths what is hidden beneath the surface.
Because of its slow nature, it takes time to fully appreciate the impact of Pluto. It works its magic and doles out its lessons over time.
Typically we need the benefit of perspective to fully appreciate the lessons that Pluto is teaching and the impact it is having on us as individuals and in the collective.
