Whenever I hear someone say that they need help to create new habits, I can’t help but laugh.
We create habits all the time, without any help, and without even thinking about the science around it or the system for it.
Think of all the things you tend to do automatically.
The way you reach for your phone every time it buzzes or whenever you’re bored.
The way you reach for the remote when you sit down on the couch.
Where you put your shoes or your bag when you walk into your home.
Most of what we do every day is a function of habit.
Habits are the things we do unconsciously, without thinking about them. It’s the automaticity of life.
And it’s what gets us stuck in a rut.
When I hear people say that they need to create “better habits,” I know that what they really mean is that they feel stuck in some area of life. Something in their routine isn’t working for them and they need to change it.
They need to break a habit.
That’s a bit harder.
When you’re used to doing the same thing in the same way it can feel difficult to interrupt the flow to do something differently.
Habits are comfortable. They give us security. And we like the stability of what’s familiar. Most people don’t like change.
Whenever I feel stuck and in need of a change, I tends to look first for the big change. Most people I know do the same thing.
And because we don’t like change, we resist the big change. We continue in our habit rut. And the cycle continues.
Here’s the good news: you don’t need to make a big change.
Often, it only takes a small change to get out of a rut. You don’t need to overhaul your whole day, or even your whole morning. Just one small tweak can be enough to set a new chain of events into motion.
Making one small change can trigger ripple effects that shake up your routine and get you out of the rut.
