Every day, things happen in your personal life and in the collective.
You failed the test. You didn’t get the job. You got promoted. You got fired. You never got married. Someone rejected your proposal. The stock market went up. The real estate market crashed. Inflation increased. Nobody enrolled in your course. You didn’t get the deal.
You have a story about what each of these events and experiences mean. Often, those stories are well-worn beliefs that we have inherited from others.
Every story or belief is a matter of perspective.
The angle from which we view something shapes how we see it, which shapes the meaning we give to it.
When you change your angle, you change your perspective.
Here are 3 ways you can change your angle on a current issue:
- Zoom Out: Look at it through a broader lens. Consider a longer time horizon or a wider scope.
- Zoom In: Get closer to it. Consider one piece of the challenge instead of the whole thing. Break it into smaller pieces.
- Fresh Eyes: Look at it through the eyes of someone who is unfamiliar with the industry or the circumstances.
The longer you look at something from the same angle, the less clearly you see it. If you want something to change, the first thing you need to do is change your perspective.
A coach, mentor, or advisor can help you see things from a new angle.
