When Sadness Knocks
when sadness
knocks on your door
do you send it away?
when melancholy
sneaks in to your bed
do you roll over
pretending to be asleep?
when anger
sets fire to your space
do you pour water on its flames?
when hopelessness calls
do you hang up the phone?
when grief rings the bell
do you pretend you’re not home?
when despair and disappointment enter
do you hide in a corner?
once you’ve sealed all the openings
and barricaded yourself
to keep out the unwanted visitors
how does joy enter?
how does hope come in?
how does love make its way to you?
you thought you could keep some out
and let others in
you didn’t realize that they arrive together
hand in hand
through the same door.
