In an era where classic movies are often remade with modern twists, it’s notable that The Wizard of Oz hasn’t received such treatment.
That’s because it’s premise, plot, and lessons remain as relevant today as they were when the movie was released in 1939.
Perhaps they are even more relevant today.
The marketing directed towards us reminds us about all the things we lack: knowledge, skills, courage, love, a picture-perfect family, a better home, a meaningful purpose.
Like Dorothy, many of us look to others to fill whatever hole feels biggest. Maybe it’s a new shiny object, a new course, or certification.
Black Friday is a day devoted to consumerism. A holiday for shopping, for searching for whatever product we might think will fill the hole.
Whether you’re shopping for physical products, digital products, or online courses, there is still an aspect of looking to fill your need through some outside source.
The Wizard of Oz reminds us that what we seek is already within.
That’s not to say that every person peddling a product or service or course is a fraud behind a curtain. We need support on the journey within. Dorothy didn’t do it alone and neither can we.
We need mentors to guide us. We need others to hold the light while we dig, or to reflect what we can’t see.
But it’s important to be clear about whether what you’re seeking from any investment you make with your resources is realistic.
Ultimately the work of filling the hole — the work of finding and coming home — is an inside job. It’s not something that another person can teach us.
There are no shortcuts. We have to walk the yellow brick road in our own ruby slippers, navigate the haunted forest and the poppy field, and do the work ourselves.
Love it? Hate it? What do you think? Don't hold back...
