What If Nothing Needed Fixing?

December 16, 2019 | Renée Fishman

I haven’t watched television in over two-and-a-half years. I try to limit my news consumption to no more than an hour a day — a huge shift from the days when I had news playing in the background all morning. And an even bigger shift from the days when I worked in television news.

I also haven’t been on most social media for the past 9 months. And I try not to talk about news or politics, because most conversations on those topics are energy vampires.

Many people ask me if I’m aware of what’s going on in the country and in the world.

I’m not living under a rock. Of course I’m aware. I just choose to focus on different things.

I’m listening for truth.

If you read the news right now, it’s easy to walk away with the belief that everything is broken and needs to be fixed.

The climate. Political systems. Businesses.

You.

This creates a lot of anxiety and a lot of energy spent looking for solutions to problems.

Here’s a question I’ve been asking myself lately:

What if nothing is broken? What if nothing needs to be fixed or healed?

What if …

  • we have the President and Congress we deserve?
  • the political system is working as it was intended?
  • the climate is where it’s supposed to be?
  • you’re not broken?
  • the people you know and love aren’t broken?
  • nobody needs to be fixed or healed?

What if all the problems we see in the world around us aren’t problems at all, but simply manifestation of a bigger plan, here to teach us some lesson?

What if our only task right now is to be with things as they are?

Where would you direct your energy if nobody around you needed to change or needed to be fixed or healed?

To be clear: I’m not advocating that you sit on the sidelines and ignore what’s going on in the world. I’m simply wondering if perhaps there’s a greater purpose to what is happening around the world, and if we might be missing the opportunity in our rush to change things.

What if the solutions we are seeking for a better future come only after we accept the present?
