The Best Way to Grow Your Business

March 17, 2016 | Renée Fishman

Last week: I was jamming to Pitbull (a surprise guest) on day 1 of Tony Robbins’ Unleash the Power Within event and preparing for my 8th firewalk. I was attending UPW as a member of the volunteer event staff — part of the Crew program for UPW graduates. It was my 7th time serving on crew.

Over the course of the 4-day event I experienced major shifts in personal transformation and growth, some of which I helped catalyze in others and all of which profoundly affected me as well as the other lives in the room.

This week: Back in NYC. I cleared my schedule to accommodate a new international client who came into town at the last minute to look at apartments.

Tonight I went for spinal entrainment to my Network Spinal Analysis practitioner, followed by a powerful Deeksha (oneness blessing).

On the surface, it’s two different worlds. Completely different environments and  activities from last week to this week.

And yet I was facilitating the same outcome in both environments:

Transforming lives.

This is me at my best. When I’m showing up as my best, most complete self, I’m helping people move. Not just to a new physical home, but to a new emotional home, or mental home or spiritual home. Sometimes all four at once. Usually more than one of those at once.

I left for UPW last week on the heels of the soul-opening Divine Femme immersion led by my friend and mentor Margaret Nichols and all of it is bubbling up and creating massive shifts. (Massive is actually a bit of an understatement here). I’m still processing so much; I feel like I need a good month of seclusion to finish processing and writing everything that’s inside me.

So far this year I have immersed myself in a steady stream of experiences, both “personal” and “business.”

We’re not yet finished with Q1 of this calendar year and I’ve immersed in 3 soul-opening, transformational experiences + 2 real estate conferences. Plus, 3 full-immersion days with a home organizing team in which I cleared about half the physical clutter from my apartment (ok, maybe 1/4 of the clutter. There’s a lot more to go. I may be recruiting a new organizing team to help).

I’m not one to measure “ROI” of events because you simply can’t do it with these types of experiences, yet so many people ask about this.

They want to know how it helps my business. They can’t imagine taking time to go to an industry conference, let alone a 50-hour immersion in Energy and the Subtle Body. Most people in my non-personal growth world ask me why I would pay to fly to an event and work for free.

The truth is that I don’t think about how any of this will help my business. I attend and participate and volunteer and immerse myself in these experiences because they are vehicles through which I expand myself.

That expansion creates a space for more of me to come through. This allows me to hold space for more clients and to facilitate the transformation of others. I trust that my expansion will lead to more business. Maybe not tomorrow, but in the coming months and years.

Here’s something worth noting: of the 5 events I’ve attended so far this year, the real estate industry conferences have had the least impact on my real estate business. If I were to measure ROI, they would rank at the bottom of the list, and not by a close margin.

It’s the other work that really impacts what I do in a real and tangible way.

Energy and the Subtle Body. Divine Femme. Unleash the Power Within.

These fuel my growth. They shape my identity and how I show up in the world.
The ability to read people, to tap into a person’s soul, to communicate more effectively. The skill of helping someone make a shift that puts them on a new path (even if only a slight change from their current path), to communicate effectively. The leadership skills. The coaching skills and hands on experience in coaching the hundreds of people I meet. These are the essential skills of life. Of humanity.

Of course, it turns out they are pretty helpful in business, but life is what matters more here.

Any one of these skills is more valuable than any breakout session on “lead generation” or “understanding millennial buyers.”

That’s not to say that industry events don’t serve a purpose. They do, otherwise I wouldn’t attend.

The skills I learn and practice through my personal development work empower me to work more effectively with people.

And that’s what this is about.

Real estate, and all business, is about people. Human beings. Understanding human emotions. Mastering interpersonal dynamics.

It’s about helping people meet their needs — not just finding or delivering what we or our clients think they want.

We live in a world that is operating from a place of fear. Most people out there play on our fears: fear of missing out, of not having enough information, of losing a potential apartment or deal.

I believe that the ability to help others investigate their fear, hold space for it and navigate through it will be the most valuable capital in the years to come.

That’s the skill I’m building. The ability to help others transform in the face of fear. And the capacity to do this from a place of compassion and empathy.

What’s the ROI of working on yourself?

What’s the ROI of expanding your identity?

How would your life change if you focused on that?
How would our world change if each of us   focused on that?
