Evolution is inevitable. Change is the nature of life. And inherent in change is instability and discomfort. We don’t always know where the next evolution will take us; we can’t see into the future.
Just as fundamental as the inevitability of change is our need for stability. We are hardwired to seek safety and security. We gravitate toward the familiar and what is comfortable.
New Moon in Taurus: Comfort vs Change
This tension between our need for security and our need for change is brought into focus by the New Moon in Taurus on April 27 (3:31 pm ET, 7º46’ Taurus).
At a New Moon, the Sun and Moon are at the same degree of the sky. This New Moon occurs in the sign of Taurus, a yin, fixed, earth sign.
A New Moon in Taurus is typically lush and fertile. The Moon exalts in Taurus — it’s in a place of honor and reverence. The fertile ground of Taurus fits the Moon’s yin nature; the spaciousness and sensuality creates a nourishing space for the Moon’s job of feeling into the body and emotions.
Ruled by Venus, the New Moon in Taurus generally brings themes of peace, stability, and simplicity. Taurus is the lush gardens of spring; a place of harmony, pleasure, and comfort.
This New Moon, however, brings conflict and pressure.
New Moon Square Mars and Pluto
At the New Moon, the Sun and Moon, together in Taurus, are forming a square to both Mars in Leo and Pluto in Aquarius. This creates a configuration known as a T-square:
The Moon (with the Sun) is sitting at a 90º angle to the Mars/Pluto opposition.
A T-square takes the tension of an opposition and builds in friction, like a pressure cooker where something may explode.
Both Mars and Pluto relate to our desires: Mars represents our conscious desires, while Pluto represents our unconscious compulsions and fears. These two planets, also in fixed signs, are in a tug of war.
The New Moon is both in friction to this opposition and represents the way out of the stalemate.
This alignment brings into focus the tension between the need to transform and our desire for comfort and security.
A New Moon in Taurus is not typically one that would catalyze change; it’s usually more about planting seeds and waiting for them to take root. For all the groundedness and stability that Taurus represents, this is also a sign known for stubbornness and resistance to change.
But this New Moon is inviting us to embrace a different strategy.
Mars and Pluto are not giving us comfort; they are here to disrupt the patterns that can keep us stagnant.
The Discomfort of Rebirth
New Moons are a rebirth, and nothing is birthed without a little friction and discomfort. From the baby that pushes its way out of the womb (or must be extracted by force) to the sprouts that push through the soil or a slab of concrete, growth is often painful.
It takes the strength, persistence, and perseverance of a bull to charge into something new.
This New Moon invites us to reconcile these two sides of our nature: to dig in our heels and charge forward at the same time.
The invitation at this New Moon is to redefine security and comfort in a way that helps us embrace change. Perhaps security is not material, but the knowing that you have the inner resources to survive — and thrive through — the uncertainty.
Love it? Hate it? What do you think? Don't hold back...
