Imagine you leave your house to head to a party. On your way, you plan to stop at a store to pick up wine for your host. You get to the wine store and realize you forgot your wallet and ID.
So now you need reverse course, go back home, and retrieve what you left behind. Then you’ll reverse course again and head back on your path. Perhaps you go back to the wine store on your way to the party. Or maybe you’ll learn that everyone else brought wine, so instead of bringing wine, you stop at a different store to pick up cheese.
This is the essence of Mercury retrograde.
Retrace Your Steps
Mercury retrogrades, which occur approximately 3–4 times per year, are 3-week periods when we are called to retrace our steps in a certain area of life, or with respect to a project.
We’ve reached a certain point in the trajectory and then we hit a sticking point. There’s something missing, or an obstacle preventing us from moving forward.
To uncover what it is, we must retrace our steps and go backward along our path. We review where we’ve been and what we did.
- What steps did you miss?
- What did you forget?
- What did you overlook?
- Did you miss an important data point?
Mercury Cazimi: A Moment of Clarity
As you’re retracing your steps, there comes a point where new information comes to light. It’s a moment of insight or clarity that gives you what you need to move forward.
This crucial moment of clarity arrives when Mercury, traveling retrograde, meets up with the Sun, in what’s called a cazimi (March 24, 2025, 3:48 pm ET 4º24’ Aries).
As Mercury enters the heart of the Sun, it’s a moment of purification and renewal for Mercury, like a new moon phase of the lunar cycle.
Mercury cazimi is the moment where we receive insights, solutions, and guidance for how to solve the problem we uncover during Mercury’s retrograde period. It’s the missing puzzle piece that helps us solve the puzzle and move forward.
The crucial information might be something you ignored the first time around. Maybe there was a group chat where everyone coordinated what they would bring to the party, and you missed it.
Or, it might be completely new information that you couldn’t have known previously.
It’s a time to pay close attention to the messages you receive — from any source.
You already know where you’re going; this moment of clarity will help you better navigate there.
