As we settle into the new reality of the upheaval that will arise with Uranus now in Gemini, the Full Moon in practical Capricorn (July 10, 4:36 PM ET, 18º50’ Capricorn) arrives to help us ground the scattered air energy and shows us how to take action amidst the turmoil.
At a full moon, the Moon and the Sun are in opposite but compatible signs. A full moon in Capricorn occurs each year during Cancer season, when the Sun is in Cancer and the Moon is in Capricorn.
The Foundation for Action
The Cancer-Capricorn axis is a cardinal axis, infused with the initiating energy. Our impulse in these seasons is to rush to get started on a new project. But Cancer and Capricorn, each in their own way, also speak to the importance of proper nourishment, structure, and rest as the essential foundations of any endeavor.
Cancer, ruled by the Moon, is the sign of home, care, and nurturing. This water sign reminds us of the importance of emotional tending: creating a safe space for our emotions, so that we can process them without having them flood us.
Capricorn, ruled by Saturn, is the sign of structures, persistence, and practical action. An earth sign, Capricorn is the ground that holds us, the soil in which we root.
The Moon is said to be in its “detriment” in Capricorn, the farthest point from its home in Cancer. The Moon represents the body and emotions. When it’s in detriment, it reflects the challenge we may feel to access, validate, and express our emotions and meet our needs.
This Full Moon illuminates where we struggle to express emotions, ask for help, or meet our needs. It reveals our patterns of excessive self-reliance that keep us from seeking support.
We need both emotional safety and reliable systems to thrive — especially in times of chaos.
This Full Moon forms a supportive aspect to Mars in Virgo, facilitating grounded, practical action rooted in data and discernment.
Review Your Systems
This Full Moon is ruled by Saturn, the ruler of Capricorn.
Saturn is the planet of structure, systems, boundaries, rules, and restrictions. It teaches us that to turn ideas into reality we need to implement structures and systems that support our work. It reminds us that building big things takes time, and that it’s important to cultivate patience for the long road.
At the time of this full moon, Saturn is about to station retrograde in a close conjunction to Neptune in Aries.
This retrograde will invite us to review our systems and structures.
- What systems have you relied on that are no longer aligned with your path?
- What structures are no longer supporting you?
- What rules or restrictions have you put in place — perhaps to protect yourself —that are no longer serving you?
Where Saturn creates structures, Neptune dissolves them. This might be exactly what we need in this moment of change.
It’s time to discard any systems that are no longer aligned for our new path, and create new structures that better support us.
The Next Practical Step
The Full Moon in Capricorn comes at a time when everything feels uncertain to remind us that we don’t need to be paralyzed when things are in flux.
We don’t need to see the whole landscape to make progress. We don’t need to have it all figured out.
The path to progress begins with ensuring that our needs are met; it continues with slow, steady, sustainable, and practical actions.
When the task feels too big, when the change feels overwhelming, break things up.
One step at a time, no matter how small the steps.
As the saying goes, do what you can do, with what you have, where you are.
Love it? Hate it? What do you think? Don't hold back...
