Making sure we are speaking the same language and defining the terms we use is Communications 101.
If I tell you that “I put the mail on the table” you know what I mean.
I don’t have to describe to you what “mail” means or what a “table” is.
That’s because we share a common language. Imagine, however, if you didn’t know what “mail” is or what a “table” is. In that case, I’d need to describe to you each of those terms.
Or, let’s say I put the mail on your desk, but your desk looked like a table to me. In that case you might be confused because what you call a “desk” I called a “table” — although not so confused that you couldn’t figure out what I meant.
Without this foundation, we are prone to misunderstandings — or being left out of the conversation entirely.
The more languages you speak, the easier it is to navigate the world and connect with other people.
Conversation also becomes more efficient when you have a common language.
Astrology gives us a lot of great language and metaphors that we use in daily life.
If I describe someone as “mercurial” or “saturnian” you likely can get a sense of what that person is like, even if I don’t give you any further details. Incidentally, the meanings we ascribe to those terms come from the archetypes attributed to the planets Mercury and Saturn.
For two people who speak astrology, describing a day as “feeling like I’m in a Mercury retrograde” conveys a whole range of experiences and emotions in just a few words.
It speeds up the conversation and allows the people conversing to dig deeper into what’s going on. They don’t need to spend a lot of time explaining the situation.
Astrology Language is Part of Our Lexicon
Whether you “believe” in astrology or not, you’re already living within a paradigm where its language is part of the conversation: from terms like “mercurial” and “saturnian” to the days of the week, which are all named after planets.
Even the calendar framework of months and years comes from the cycles of the planets.
Learning the language of astrology has opened me up to information that was right in front of me.
Literacy is power.
