Even the best productivity and personal knowledge management systems have a crucial shortcoming: they don’t tell you when to focus on any given area or project in your life.
Knowing what to do is only part of the battle.
Without this crucial piece of guidance, you’ll end up spinning your wheels trying to figure out when to do it.
This is where the system and framework offered by astrology comes in.
On the surface, astrology is the study of planetary patterns and how the energy of the planets and their interactions is reflected in our lives. But it’s also a potent tool for directing our focus and attention to the right project at the right time.
The key to using astrology in this way is to understand the concept of Houses.
Houses = Areas of Life
Life is complex.
We have multiple projects going for work, home life, with friends and family, and for our own well-being. We must tend to our daily health rituals like working out and eating well, and to our emotional and spiritual life.
Whether you want to organize notes, material possessions, or your time, the first step is to identify the different areas, or categories, into which you can place things.
Ancient astrologers divided life into twelve major areas — called “Houses.” The Houses are presented in a circular chart, like a wheel of life.
They overlay on the zodiac wheel, so we can associate each sign in our natal chart with a particular House, or area of life.
Once we know what House corresponds to each sign in our chart, we can use different techniques or indicators to inform us where to direct our focus.
But even if you don’t know anything about your chart, you can use astrology to help you direct your focus, by using the significations of each sign to direct your attention and actions.
Here are 3 basic ways you can use astrology on a day-to-day basis to help you know when and where to place your focus.
3 Ways to Use Astrology to Direct Your Daily Focus
(1) Follow the Sun
The Sun and Moon are the two luminaries. When we follow the light, it will help us direct our focus to a particular area of life.
The Sun spends about a month in every sign. When the Sun is in a sign, it pulls focus to that sign and its corresponding House in your chart, as well as to matters associated with that sign.
If you follow the Sun over the course of a year, you will direct some attention to each area of your life throughout the year.
(2) Follow the Moon
Of course, you don’t want to ignore the other parts of your life for 11 months of each year. This is where it helps to follow the Moon. The Moon spends approximately 2.5 days in each sign every month, completing a lap around the entire zodiacal wheel in a month.
In fact, this is where the word “month” comes from.
By giving some extra attention to the House where the moon is as it transits through the signs, you’ll ensure that you spend a little time on every area of your life each month.
In addition to the daily moon transits, new moons and full moons pull our focus to specific signs. At the new moon, the Sun and Moon are together in the same sign, bringing extra focus to a particular area of life, and new projects we might want to initiate.
At a full moon, the Sun and Moon are in opposite signs, pulling our focus to two signs, and two areas of life, that are on the same axis.
For example, the area of life that is about the self sits opposite from the area of life that is about our committed relationships. A full moon invites us to consider the relationship and tensions between these two areas.
(3) Notice Where the Planets Are Gathering
In addition to the Sun and Moon, the other planets cycle around the zodiacal wheel. Sometimes, two or more pile up in the same sign or signs.
For example, the sign of Taurus currently is hosting a planetary party, with the Sun, Venus, Uranus, and Jupiter all in its sign. Tomorrow, Mercury will join them. That’s a lot of energy in the sign of Taurus, which brings extra attention to the House that is associated with Taurus.
On a collective level, it also brings focus to Taurus-related concepts, such as sustainability, planting, earth and climate, money, resources, daily pleasures, material pleasures, food and agriculture, and our value and self-worth.
Astrology Gives Us the What, Where, and When
As opposed to productivity systems that only tell us how to organize our information, data, notes, or possessions, astrology gives us guidance to the complete package.
The House system delineates areas of our life that require our focus and attention. By following the Sun, Moon, and planets through the signs of the zodiac, we get crucial information on how to organize our time, so we can live full and well-rounded lives.
