A Weightlifting Principle for Astrology Skeptics

July 13, 2024 | Renée Fishman

On paper, my squat day workout looks like a heavy leg day.

I warm up with heavy barbell lunges before I get to back squats. Then I do front squats.

You might think my legs would be on fire after this — or during. Sadly, this is often not the case. Perhaps it’s a result of years of daily exercise, but I rarely experience muscle soreness after a workout.

When I experience muscles soreness after a workout, I get excited, as if it’s “proof” that my legs worked.

When I report to my coach that I don’t feel it in my legs, he reminds me:

Just because you don’t feel a muscle working doesn’t mean it isn’t working.

This is one of those universal principles that can be applied to all aspects of our sensory and lived experience.

How Attuned Are Your Senses?

If you live in a house with smokers, you eventually will be desensitized to the smell of cigarette smoke in your environment. But just because you don’t smell the tobacco doesn’t mean it’s not in the air.

Dogs can hear sounds at higher frequencies than humans. Just because you don’t hear the dog whistle doesn’t mean there isn’t sound.

A person with a refined palette might taste the notes of oak or cherry in a glass of wine. Just because you can’t taste them doesn’t mean they aren’t there.

On a cloudy day, you might not see the sunset. Just because you can’t see it doesn’t mean it’s not happening.

The Energy of Planetary Movement

When I hear astrology skeptics express doubts about the idea that planetary energy can impact life on Earth, this principle comes to mind.

“Not feeling it” doesn’t mean it’s not happening.

Each person has a different sensory experience of the same stimuli.

Just as with smells, sounds, sights, and physical sensations, we experience energy differently. Some people are more attuned to subtle energy shifts, while some are less attuned to them.

Even though I don’t always feel my legs working when I do squats and I’m not sore the next day, it doesn’t mean I didn’t work my legs.

In the same way, just because you can’t feel the energy of planetary shifts doesn’t mean they’re not impacting you or the people around you.

Your lack of perception doesn’t prove the absence of impact.
