How to Generate a Steady Stream of Ideas

March 17, 2018 | Renée Fishman

Are you struggling to generate ideas for all the content you need to produce? In today’s episode of My Circus Life, I share my top secrets for how I never run out of ideas.

Today is Saturday, and that means a new episode of My Circus Life, a weekly livestream broadcast where I share lessons I learn in my trampoline and trapeze practices, and how they apply to life and business.

Today’s episode was about how to nurture your creativity.

You can watch the replay here.

Are You Struggling to Find Ideas?

One of the biggest concerns I hear from other business owners is about generating ideas for their blog, videos, social media, newsletters, and other forms of content.

A friend recently told me that he is in awe of how much content I put out. Since I started my daily blogging practice, one common question I receive is:

Do you ever run out of ideas?

I’m going to be brutally honest here: No.

I know ideation is a challenge for many creatives. So in today’s episode of My Circus Life, I shared one of my top secrets for nurturing my creativity and generating an endless stream of ideas.

The entire show is less than 8 minutes long. You can watch it here:

Is Your Muse Elusive?

When the Muse visits, invite her in for a drink. — Sean Carpenter

Creative professionals talk about The Muse as if she is elusive.

The Muse is not elusive. She tells you where she is, if you’re listening.

Have you ever had friends who insisted that you always come over to their place to hang out? The Muse is that friend. If you want to develop a closer relationship with your Muse, you must visit the Muse in the Muse’s house, and invite yourself in for a drink.

Notice Where Your Muse Lives

For me, one of those places is the big white tent of Trapeze School New York. Today, after a 2-hour trampoline practice, I spent another 2 hours doing strength training and and conditioning with a friend. Then, after broadcasting today’s show, I stayed longer, joining some other friends for more conditioning.

By the time I left TSNY, I had been there for 6 hours. That may seem like a lot of time. But I left there with a list of topics and lessons that will yield several articles and show topics.

Where Does Your Muse Live?

My top secret for generating an endless supply of ideas is that I go to where my Muse lives, and I spend time there. My Muse and I don’t drink; we move. This is simple and obvious, but rarely followed:

If you want to stock your shelves with an endless supply of ideas, you must spend time in the places where you generate ideas.

Where that place is differs for every person. It may be through art, fitness, cooking, baking, competitive sports, or some other activity. Your muse may be in multiple places.

Don’t wait for the Muse to visit you. Find the places where your Muse lives, and visit your Muse. Invite yourself in. Allow yourself to linger there. You’ll soon find your shelves fully-stocked with ideas.

Other Tips

I shared more tips for keeping my shelves stocked in today’s broadcast, which you can watch on my Vimeo channel, at the link below:
