The benefits of being out in nature are well-established.
For me, “nature” is the beach or the coastline: the place where water and earth meet under the bright gaze of the Sun, where the air’s breeze directs the waves, in a rhythm that mirrors the pulse of our beating hearts.
The Intelligence of Great Nature
Opening to the cosmic interaction of the elements at the beach can show us the intelligence of great nature.
The earth is the container for the water; it gives structure to that water and forms its shape. At the same time, the water’s movement shapes the very container that holds it. Over time, the constant lapping of the waves against rocks erodes those rocks and pulls them in.
The water’s impact is boosted by the sun and wind, which heat it and cause its movement.
Over the course of a day, the tide comes in and goes out, usually twice, in a rhythm so predictable we can chart it to a clock.
Observing this cosmic play of the elements reminds me that all parts of nature are intended to work together, to shape each other.
People are the same.
The Metaphor for Life
The work we are here to do cannot be done alone. The magic of what we do requires other people.
- We need the grounding of someone holding space for us.
- We need the unsettling waves that come from the wind blowing our emotions.
- We need to occasionally dissolve the structures that are holding us, so we can change our landscape.
- We need the fire to kick us into action and warm us up.
This elemental interplay happens without our involvement or interference. It’s nature taking care of itself.
This, too, offers an important lesson.
When it comes to our life and work projects, sometimes our best move is to stay out of the way and let nature take its course.
Love it? Hate it? What do you think? Don't hold back...
