Giving up. Dropping out. Letting go.
Dare I even say … quitting.
In a culture that promotes the virtues of consistency, persistence, and perseverance, the decision to stop is often one that is made with resistance.
But the truth is that it’s natural for interests and priorities to change. We have limits on our time, energy, and resources. We can’t do everything at once.
This weekend’s new moon solar eclipse in Virgo (Sunday, September 21, 3:54 pm ET, 29º05’ Virgo) shows us where we are reaching our limits. It gives us a strong push to end something, in order to create space and start fresh.
Meeting Your Limits
On the way to the new moon, the Sun in Virgo makes an opposition to Saturn retrograde in Pisces (September 21, 1:45 am ET, 28º30’).
Saturn is the planet of limits, boundaries, and “no.”
When we are inclined to say yes to everything, our inner Saturn reminds us that we have limits. Sometimes that “inner Saturn” takes the shape of a body in pain that won’t cooperate, brain fog, or an outer obstacle.
With Saturn retrograde in Pisces, we are revisiting something that has come up before. This limitation is not new; now is the time to heed its guidance.
The Sun in Virgo is about clarity, practicality, and discernment. This is the time to sort through what is commanding our energy and discern what is serving and what’s no longer serving.
You might have previously tried to push through the obstacle or figure out a way to make it work.
Now is the time to let the thing go.
Solar Eclipse in Virgo: Release to Reset
We often think of New Moons as inception points, which they are. But they are also endings. The two go hand-in-hand.
A solar eclipse is like a super-charged new moon.
Eclipses point to major endings and beginnings, although the nature of an eclipse — where the light is blocked for a period of time — hides what’s happening in the moment. We often don’t see what’s ending or beginning until later in the cycle.
This new moon and eclipse happen near the south node, which is a point of release.
An Unfolding Story
That doesn’t mean you’ll release everything at once. This is the second of four eclipses we will have in Virgo at the South Node; it’s a chapter in an unfolding story that will continue across the Virgo/Pisces axis through February 2027.
Take note at what came up in March 2025 at the lunar eclipse in Virgo; that can offer clues as to what issues are ripe for review.
Also look back at last year’s lunar eclipse in Pisces as well as the most recent lunar eclipse in Pisces. These are the other touch points in this story.
A Bookend New Moon
This new moon in Virgo is the second new moon we’ve had in Virgo this year. The first new moon of Virgo season set the stage for what we would be called to release now.
This weekend’s new moon is happening at in the final degree of Virgo (29º05’).
In Virgo, the final degree is a double ending: it ends both the Sun’s transit through the sign and the summer season. In the framework of the seasons, it’s the end of the quarter.
After meeting up with the moon, the Sun will move into Libra, Earth will pause for the Autumn Equinox, and we will begin a new season.
Release to Renew
This new moon corresponds to the start of Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year. This isn’t just turning a page in the calendar, it has the potential to provide a fresh start.
The new moon and solar eclipse are redirecting us to a new way of living, being, and relating.
This is a call to release whatever you’ve been holding that is no longer serving you, refine your focus, redirect your energy, and start a new chapter.
Love it? Hate it? What do you think? Don't hold back...
