While I’m on vacation this week, I’m revisiting some of my past essays.
In this essay, I shared a crucial lesson I learned while making my Bubby’s Passover sponge cake recipe:
Over beating the egg whites to stiff peaks will prevent the cake from rising.
The lesson I learned in making the cake applies to other components of life as well:
Doing more does not necessarily make something better, create more value, or lead to better outcomes. In fact, in many cases it leads to worse outcomes.
An ideal creative piece, workout, coaching program – indeed, an ideal life – is like an ideal sponge cake: filled with flavor, yet also light and airy, with a spaciousness that leaves you feeling like you can always eat another slice.
This lesson also applies other aspects of life. For example, you can also apply this when planning your day:
Trying to schedule too much inevitably results in getting less done. On the other hand, when you leave space for processing and down time, you can fit in a lot more.
Love it? Hate it? What do you think? Don't hold back...
