5 Things to Know About Gemini Season in 2024

May 20, 2024 | Renée Fishman

On Monday May 20 at 8:59 am ET, the Sun moves into the sign of Gemini marking the official start to Gemini season. It’s a big shift in energy from the stability of Taurus season, and will be a big change from previous Gemini seasons.

Here are 5 things to know about Gemini season in 2024.

(1) Qualities: Mercury-Ruled Mutable Air Sign

Each sign is associated with one of the four elements, and one of three modalities, based on where it falls in the seasons. Gemini is a mutable air sign. It is the last sign of the spring season in the Northern Hemisphere, and leads us into the summer solstice, the longest day of the year.

The ruler of Gemini is Mercury, the Messenger and Communicator.

It’s symbolized by the twins, representing a duality to Gemini.

Air is associated with ideas and thoughts. It’s not tangible — we can’t grab it, see it, or capture it. This is the nature of Gemini: flighty, scattered, ruled by Mercury and symbolized by the twins.

(2) Gemini Significations

When thinking about signs and their significaitons, EverbrightRDT, a contributor to a Reddit forum reminds us that it’s important to remember that

The signs are mediums through which the planets express their significations. Signs can either modify the expression of a planet or act as the medium through which the planet manifests.

Gemini season brings us the season of road trips and graduation parties; benefit season and a full social calendar. Gemini wants to do all the things all at once.

Gemini is a sign of learning and reinvention. It brings a flurry of ideas and Intellectual pursuits.

(3) Contrast with Taurus

Chris Brennan on The Astrology Podcast notes that each sign represents a form of compensation for the sign that preceded it; an attempt to come back to the middle path. It might help to understand Gemini in the context of a contrast with Taurus:

Whereas Taurus is fixed and sometimes stubborn, Gemini deals with stimulation and adaptability.

Whereas Taurus is patient, persevering, and sometimes possessing a single-minded focus; Gemini can be a little scattered and flighty. It wants to do everything, everywhere, all at once.

Where Taurus speaks to a level of introversion and a desire to go it alone, Gemini is a social butterfly, making connections to find solutions.

Where Taurus is stable and dependable, Gemini is often prone to instability and unpredictability.

Where Taurus moves slowly, Gemini can move too quickly in multiple directions.

Where Taurus processes information slowly, Gemini absorbs information quickly and from multiple sources. Symbolized by the twins, Gemini engages in dialogue — even with itself.

Mutability is a core feature of air: we never know which way the wind blows.

(4) 2024 Notable Transits

Each year’s Gemini season brings different energy depending on the planets that move through it. A few days after the Sun arrives, Venus will cross the threshold into Gemini. Neither of these is out of the ordinary — those planets visit Gemini once a year.

More notable will be a big shift later in the week, when Jupiter enters Gemini on May 25. Jupiter spends about a year in each sign; its departure from Taurus and entrance to Gemini will mark a major shift in energy and tone.

Jupiter rules Sagittarius, the sign opposite Gemini, and therefore is said to be in its detriment in Gemini. This means that it doesn’t have access to all of the resources it would like to have to do its best work.

That doesn’t make this placement bad; it just means it must work harder — or differently — to do it’s best work of bringing blessings and abundance.

(5) Aspects to Pluto and Saturn

As an air sign, Gemini sits in a sign-based trine — a supportive aspect — with the other air signs: Aquarius and Libra. As a mutable sign, it forms a square — a relationship of friction — with other mutable signs: Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces.

As planets move into Gemini they will first come into a trine with Pluto in Aquarius, then eventually form a square with Saturn in Pisces.

Jupiter’s square to Saturn will happen 3 times over the next several months, as both Jupiter and Saturn will eventually station retrograde. This can bring friction between expansion and limitation.
