Today I heard somebody say this:
I can’t wait to get back to life.
There seems to be this illusion that life has stopped. That we’re on a “pause” until life can go “back to normal.”
As if we are grounded teenagers, stuck in our rooms, waiting for our sentence to be over so we can go back to shopping, working, doing errands, acquiring more things.
You know, life.
Life hasn’t stopped.
This is life.
Life is what’s happening right now.
Obviously, it might not look the way it did before. It might never look that way again.
Our Great Disconnect
We are living in a world whose population has grown increasingly distant from living according to the laws of nature. The sacred pause has been dishonored and disavowed in favor of the 24/7 hustle and go-go-go mentality.
The endless pursuit of more and bigger.
That way is unsustainable. It leads to overuse of our personal and natural resources, to great detriment. We are seeing the effects of this in the current pandemic.
There is a lesson for us here, and we ignore it at our own peril.
Learn to live according to the rhythms of nature.
Nature observes a pause. Daily, weekly, monthly, seasonally.
The clock, calendar, and bank account are poor guides for a life of meaning.
Rest. Observe the pause. Embrace the stillness. Surrender.
This is where you will find life.
This is Life
“I can’t wait to get back to life.”
Where are you trying to get back to?
You’re already here.
You can “get back to life” the moment you accept that this is life.
Life is here. Life is now. Life is in this moment.
[…] I wrote the other day, these messages miss the point: life is happening right now. There is no “going back to […]
