The Mindset Behind a Daily Routine

June 26, 2026 | Renée Fishman

I haven’t missed a daily workout since starting my daily “fitness first” practice in 2013.

People often ask me how I sustain daily workouts for that long.

Rest assured, I am not empowered with some superhuman level of discipline.

It’s more basic: I redefine what counts.

I like to workout, and in a perfect world I’d have 2–3 hours a day for a workout. But this is not a perfect world. so I often have to adapt.

If I only have an hour, then that’s what I do. If I only have 30 minutes, I’ll do that. And if I only have 10 minutes, I’ll make it count.

When I travel, I bring resistance bands with me so I can workout in airport lounges or hotel rooms.

The crucial mindset I adopt is: Something is better than nothing.

The goal is to maintain the routine.

Maintaining the routine takes the thought process out of it.

That’s why, even when I’m tired or injured, I like to show up to the gym. The time is already blocked on my calendar, so I don’t need to think about when to do it.

Small efforts may not feel like enough in the moment, but by showing up every day, I never need to “get back into it” or “get back on track.”
