New Moon in Virgo: Create Rituals to Renew

September 17, 2020 | Renée Fishman

New moon rituals to renew

The more I slow down and attune to nature and the workings of the universe, the more I see how its structure and movement is always working to support us. And the ancient wisdom traditions are keyed into this system, reflecting the messages of the moment.

Today is the new moon, falling in the astrological sign of Virgo.

Astrology of the New Moon in Virgo

Astrologer Chani Nicholas offers that

Virgo takes what’s in disarray and creates thoughtful rituals wherein balance can be restored.….This sign teaches us that with the right tools, we can work towards a humble solution. Ready to sacrifice fame for the fortune of thoughtfully applied craft, Virgo offers the habits that foster healing.

Coming at a time when the world feels “out of order” and in the midsts of some challenging astrology that is poised to illuminate areas of agitation and bring power struggles and tough decisions, this new moon

offers us a much needed reminder to stay connected to the smallest of solutions, the quietest of calls to align, and the kinds of editing processes that make clarity possible.

This New Moon is our invitation to perform the rituals that will help us reset, prioritizing the intelligence already intrinsic in all sentient beings…..[and speaks to] beginning that which has a solid infrastructure. Stripping away all the bells and whistles the world tells us we need, the reorganization of our priorities is urgent. Put what is sacred to you front and center.

New Month. New Year.

In the Hebrew calendar, this new moon ushers in the seventh month of Tishrei, and Rosh Hashana, the spiritual Jewish New Year. Rabbi Jonathan Sacks explains that the seventh month is a Sabbath of months, just as the seventh day of the week is the Sabbath of the week.

It is the most sacred of times, a time when we are closer to the Divine Presence than at any other point of the year, when our channels open to receive the grace of the miracles happening daily within and around us.

This is a time not merely to slow down, but to stop. It is a time to engage in the rituals that help us create space for the silence in which we can hear the still, small voice of God, reminding us that we are here for a reason, and that everything we experience — every challenge, every illness, every “setback” — arrives to support us in awakening to our purpose.

A Time for Homecoming

This new month ushers in the Ten Days of Return — a time for returning home to ourselves, to our truth, and to our deepest knowing.

When we are supported by nourishing rituals that restore and renew, we shed expectations for who we need to become and return home to the place within us that is whole and complete. In this state we are able to step forward in response to God’s calling and to respond to the question so beautifully encapsulated by the poet Mary Oliver:

Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?

My New Moon and New Year blessing for you:

May this New Moon bring you deep nourishment, restoration, and renewal for your body, mind, spirit and soul.

May you be blessed with the knowledge that you are whole and complete as you are.

May you find courage and strength to step forward in response to your calling, so that the world can benefit from the gifts that only you can offer.
